Dear SVP Community,

I’m sure you are seeing many emails from nonprofits in your networks about #GivingTuesdayNow, a global giving day to support organizations affected by COVID-19, and the communities they serve.

A global collective giving movement probably sounds familiar to those of us in the SVP networkwe take the idea behind Giving Tuesday and do it everyday. For those of you who are planning to show additional support for nonprofits and communities on Giving Tuesday, this day offers a chance to practice our values of engaged philanthropy, generosity, and proximity to community.

I wanted to share a few recommendations to consider as you think about Giving Tuesday:

  • Increase your involvement with your local SVP—SVPs across the world are identifying community needs, supporting collaboration, and ensuring a strong donor sector that is responsive to what our world needs most. Consider an extra contribution to your local SVP, if you’re able. And, while you are at it, make sure to share how you participate in your SVP community in your #GivingTuesdayNow social media posts!
  • Show solidarity—Giving Tuesday isn’t just about writing a check. Share stories of why you give on social media and with your friends and family, check in on your nonprofit contacts and ask what they need, and seek advocacy opportunities to use your power and voice to urge change.
  • Support the frontlines, and think long-term—COVID-19 has magnified the inequities in communities across the globe and it is clear that systems need to change in order to build a better future. In addition to supporting the immediate relief and recovery efforts, we need to think about resilience—and shifting power to communities who are most affected by this pandemic and by harmful systems. Consider giving to organizations where others are less likely to invest, including those led by people of color; and to movement building organizations that are doing the long-term work to create new systems.
  • Inspire others—Donors around the world are eager to support communities but many are overwhelmed by requests and unsure how to give most effectively. By being transparent about your own giving, you inspire others to do the same. As you know, networks like SVP can help donors understand the ecosystem, build connections with others, and aggregate funds for greater impact. Consider who in your personal networks might be interested in joining your local SVP and invite them to learn more today.

I hope that you will use the occasion of #GivingTuesdayNow to give generously, if you are able.

Thank you for all that you do for and with SVP.

Onward,
Sudha
