Sofia Michelakis became SVPI’s Board Chair in January of 2018. A Northwest native, she has been connected to SVP for some time now, primarily through her role as SVP’s Director of Philanthropy Development. She worked with SVP for nearly seven years before launching into a new career at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as Senior Program Officer – Giving Partnerships.
Sofia currently works with a team dedicated to the Giving Pledge, an effort to invite the the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to philanthropy.
Upon her departure from the SVP staff, Sofia and her husband John joined SVP as Partners – ensuring a sustained connection to a network that played such a big role in Sofia’s life.
Sofia describes herself as a “recovering attorney.” Following law school, she practiced corporate law for five years with an emphasis on representing emerging technology companies in corporate governance and transactional matters, which included venture capital financings and public offerings. She then turned her energies to the nonprofit sector, and worked at a social enterprise catalyst in South America, helping nonprofits with business planning and sustainability efforts.
Sofia received her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University, and her J.D., cum laude, from University of Michigan Law School.
