Op-Ed: Jane Shurtleff, SVP Tucson
No single organization can end generational poverty on its own.
In an op-ed in the Arizona Daily Star, Jane Shurtleff of SVP Tucson shares how Pima County and the City of Tucson are tackling it together. Through the Prosperity Initiative, a regional partnership built around 13 policies, local government, nonprofits, businesses, and community members are working to remove the barriers that keep families from accessing education, healthcare, housing, and good jobs.
Jane brings together voices from across that effort: county leaders expanding preschool, broadband, and eviction prevention; the county putting the same policies into practice for its own employees; city leaders building clearer paths from education to employment; and a utility partnering with community organizations to make energy more affordable. The common thread is alignment, moving from isolated programs to coordinated, systemic solutions.
Jane is living that approach herself, showing up for her community through SVP Tucson, Rotary, and the Community Coalition for Prosperity. It’s a reminder of what the SVP network does best: bringing philanthropy to the table as one partner among many, alongside the people and institutions working to change the systems that shape families’ lives.
Jane’s piece is part of a series of op-eds from SVP network leaders, developed through SVPI’s OpEd Project sessions.
