SVPI Affiliate Principles and Practices

SVPI Affiliates follow four principles that are associated with ten practices. These principles and practices articulate what we believe and how we show up. They were developed collaboratively by the network in 2024, and adopted by SVPI in 2025.

Principle 1. Give Transformationally with Investment and Engagement

We pair financial and human capital, providing multi-year, unrestricted funding that strengthens nonprofit resilience while creating meaningful pathways for partners to engage directly in service, learning, and civic action.

Practice 1: Provide Opportunities for Community Engagement & Volunteerism.

Affiliates offer meaningful pathways for donors and partners to engage directly in volunteerism and civic action.

Practice 2: Develop Direct Relationships Between Donors and Community Leaders.

Affiliates structure engagement so that donors and nonprofit leaders co-create solutions rather than operate in silos.

Practice 3: Provide Funding to NGOs or Other Social Impact Organizations.

Affiliates provide multi-year, unrestricted grants and/or financial investments to nonprofits, NGOs, charities and/or other social impact organizations.

Principle 2. Reenvision Philanthropy through Education, Reflection, and Practice

Our partners are more than funders — they are constantly evolving as learners and advocates. By cultivating donors through an equity-centered lens, our partners model trust-based philanthropy and influence change within their communities and worldwide.

Practice 4: Believe in Transforming Philanthropic pillars, Dynamics, and Models.

Affiliates inform and influence philanthropic practices within their communities, challenging traditional philanthropy and equipping donors with new perspectives.

Practice 5: Provide Mission-Driven Donor Education and/or Organizing.

Affiliates offer educational programs that inform their partners about community-based issues, systems change and/or philanthropy.

Principle 3. Share Power and Center Community Voice

We ensure that those most impacted by decisions have meaningful influence over them. By co-creating solutions with community leaders, incorporating nonprofit voices into governance and grantmaking, and practicing transparency and humility, we demonstrate a model of philanthropy where power is shared and leadership is collective.

Practice 6: Have a Culturally-Relevant Commitment to Equity, Justice, and/or Human Rights.

Affiliates embed culturally relevant social justice practices in governance, decision-making, and/or programming.

Practice 7: Have NGO Leaders or Other Community Representatives Serving in Decision-Making Roles.

Affiliates formalize governance and/or grant making structures that include nonprofit and community representatives.

Practice 8: Serve as a Community Convener and/or Develop Cross-Sector Partnerships.

Affiliates leverage their role as a convener to connect funders, nonprofits, and policymakers.

Principle 4. Advance Equity by Addressing Root Causes and Centering Justice

We focus on unearthing and addressing the systemic root causes of inequity — not just symptoms. This strategy ensures that our collective actions are both culturally relevant and transformative.

Practice 9: Understand and Address the Root Causes in Social Impact Priorities.

Affiliates integrate systems-thinking and root-cause analysis into funding and programming strategies.

Practice 10: Advocate for Systems Change to Build More Just and Equitable Communities.

Affiliates incorporate advocacy strategies into their work, ensuring that philanthropy addresses systemic barriers to justice.
