Investee Update: Reception House (Fall 2019)

Posted by abwr

Hello!  As co-lead partners for our 2019 Investee, Reception House, Barbara Hill and I (Allyson Kroetsch) wanted to introduce ourselves and give a little update on our SVP work with Reception House so far!  We are thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to learn more about the great work that Reception House is doing.

Over the summer of 2019, Reception House (RH) staff completed an organization capacity assessment tool (OCAT) after which SVP and RH met a few times through August and September to review the findings and discuss options for projects that we would begin working on.  A few projects are well underway as we head into December, including:

  • A Systems/IT Review Project to better understand what tools and systems are currently being used and where they are causing challenges for RH.  We have been able to recruit some SVP partners who recently went through a similar exercise for Carizon and hope to make some decisions and changes that will streamline the reporting, information sharing and documentation process within RH.
  • Organization Structure and Responsibilities.  Here, we are focusing on some direct support and coaching for Carl (ED for RH) and his organization.  With two sites, over 40 full time and part time staff, and other challenges such as housing and funding, we hope to help clarify roles and ensure the appropriate leadership and support is in place for the entire organization.
  • Board of Directors Support and Succession Planning. A few board members for RH have recently completed the Capacity Canada Board Boot Camp and SVP members are assisting Reception House’s Board Chair, Chris Stanley, with Board recruitment.  In addition, SVP is supporting with the considerations and development of a succession plan for the ED (they have not had one prior to now.)

Seeing first-hand the appreciation from the investee and the changes that are beginning to take place in the organization as a result of the guidance and coaching from our SVP team is quite incredible.  In addition, we have a holiday giving drive set up to provide the families at RH with toys, clothing and kitchen items this season.  The SVP Teens are also working on an event to learn more about the work Reception House does and the impact they have in our community!

We look forward to sharing more updates about the great work SVP is doing with Reception House!

Happy Holidays to all!
