The Louis Family: Philanthropy spans to the next generation

Posted by SVP Vancouver

One of the unique aspects of partnership in SVP is the ability for couples to participate together and adapt their SVP experience to their personal interests and passion.  It is also an opportunity for couples to eventually engage their adult children to contribute to their SVP activities and commitment to give back to community.

The Louis family is such an example of intergenerational Partners, as Owen Louis recently joined his parents Robin and Linda as a Partner of SVP Vancouver.

Robin and Linda grew up in Victoria and attended the University of Victoria for their undergrad; Robin, a Physics major, and Linda, a Bachelor of Arts student. They continued their education at UBC, where Linda completed her teacher training and Robin a Ph.D.  After a year living in Switzerland, they moved to Vancouver in 1972.  Linda taught English in high school until the birth of her two sons at which point she dove into the role of full-time motherhood. Robin ran a software company in the 1980s and moved on to the venture capital industry in 1991 and continues to be an angel investor today.

Robin and Linda joined Social Venture Partners Vancouver in 2004 with the understanding that their investment would be “money-only” until they had time to become further involved. This changed in 2008 when Robin retired at which time he was well entrenched in the non-profit sector with his significant involvement with Science World from 2006 to 2014.

In 2012, Robin joined the SVP board and since then has dedicated many hours to help strengthen SVP. He is currently leading our Co-Funding Initiative, helping develop our knowledge on performance measurement in the social sector, and is now the Chair of SVP’s Partner Engagement Committee, responsible for recruiting and engaging Partners.

Linda has taken on a direct role with our Investees as a member of our Opportunities Committee, contributing to the due diligence of prospective Investees, including PEDAL and The Writers’ Exchange.  With her passion for education and literacy, Linda’s involvement with The Writers’ Exchange is a natural fit and she is helping guide this aspiring Investee as they fine-tune their application to SVP for both non-financial and financial support.

In February of this year, Owen Louis was recruited by his parents to join SVP.  Leveraging his profession in the commercial real estate industry with Colliers International, Owen is offering his expertise to help Investees secure appropriate space for their unique needs and budgets.

The Louis family is contributing to SVP over generations, which is one of the great strengths that keeps our organization vibrant and sustainable.  If you have teenage or adult children who would like to learn more about SVP, please invite them to join us at our Partner Mingle & Investee Showcase on September 25 at Science World.
