SVP needs U! Your Time = Incredible Impact

Posted by SVP Vancouver

SVP relies on the expertise and commitment of its Partners to help Investees strengthen their organizational capacity and scale their impact, all in support of our vision to ensure more children and youth reach their full potential.

SVP Vancouver has a record 15 non-profits currently benefiting from our support – and with that ambitious number comes the need for more Partners to make some time to see where they can make the biggest difference in our philanthropic mission.

In his recently published book, Can’t Not Do: The Compelling Social Drive that Changes Our World, founding SVPi Board President, Paul Shoemaker states:

“The surprising truth from the trenches is: we already have numerous proven solutions for our many social challenges; what our world needs most, and what most changes our children’s future, are more people prepared and committed to act on their social impulses for the long haul. Innovation helps. Money helps, too. But greater numbers of committed people help the most.”

Are you committed to accelerating social change? Keep reading to discover how you can ramp up your giving by injecting a healthy dose of your time and experience in to SVP and our Investees. All of these options have varying time commitments. Find out more about each role from Gina.

For Partners whose availability is intermittent, taking on short-term projects is an excellent option. Click here for a list of our Investee’s non-financial needs which can vary from event day volunteering to governance advice.

If you have an area where you can contribute your skill on a project basis, or if you’re interested in learning more about a specific area of organizational need, consider joining an SVP Community of Practice. Areas of need include:

  • • Marketing and Communication
  • • Fund Development
  • • Human Resources
  • • Governance
  • • Financial Management
  • • IT and Web
  • • Strategic Planning

SVP is committed to providing its Partners with the tools and support they need to feel confident in their roles and to understand where they can find support and resources. Please join us at the SVP Partner Development Workshop on October 28th from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Find out more and RSVP here.

Partners interested in strategic planning are invited to participate in a Strategic Planning Train the Trainer Workshop on November 5 – RSVP here.

A fund development workshop for ONE TO ONE Literacy Society is scheduled for October – interested Partners are encouraged to attend to learn the art of conducting a fund development assessment and creating a fund development strategy.  Email Gina to receive more details a date and location when confirmed.

Lead Partners play an integral role in supporting our Investees by acting as a liaison between the organization and SVP and connecting them with the resources they need to become high-performing, self-sustaining organizations.

Each SVP Investee has at least one (and preferably two) Lead Partners. With our record number of Investees, and more in the pipeline, Lead Partners are needed now more than ever. If you’d like to learn more about becoming a Lead Partner, please take a moment to read this previous newsletter story featuring Nick Bedford, long time Lead Partner currently working with Growing Chefs and Yo Bro Youth Initiative.

Joining an SVP committee is a great way to understand the ins and outs of our organization and meet fellow Partners. If you are interested in finding out more, or joining, a committee, please email Gina.

There are several committees looking for members:

Development Committee – the Development Committee helps to identify and recruit individuals as Partners. It is also tasked with attracting Co-Funders to invest alongside SVP and generate investments in Donor Advised Funds, both of which can leverage SVP’s ongoing funnel of qualified community investment opportunities.

Opportunities Committee – the purpose of the Opportunities Committee (OC) is to facilitate the screening of new investment opportunities for SVP. The committee meets monthly, alternating in-person meetings with teleconferences. Members review new Investee opportunities, participate in due diligence, assist with scoping Investee projects, and facilitate the creation of the Partner Engagement Teaser for Partner vote. All Partners are encouraged and welcome to participate on the OC.  Next meeting is October 13th.  Contact Cathy Brown, Chair of the OC to RSVP or for more details.

Partner Engagement Committee – the purpose of the Partner Engagement Committee is to provide opportunities for Partners to develop skills, knowledge and confidence in their work with SVP Investees. From developing training workshops to acquiring guest speakers to reviewing the tools and processes for key roles in SVP, this committee is dedicated to enhancing Partners in their philanthropic activities. This committee is currently looking for members! Please email Gina if you are interested in finding out more.
