We’re recruiting Partners to join our Development Committee and we’d like you to meet one of our committee superstars, John Zaplatynsky.
In a nutsell, who is John Zaplatynsky?
I’m a retired life-long retailer and am enjoying my retirement by being physically active and spending more time with family and friends. In the time that’s left over I give back to the community and continue some business interests.
What inspired you to give to SVP Vancouver?
I originally joined SVP because of my belief in what SVP does to support community organizations focused on children and youth and in the model of helping nonprofits by investing time, talent, and money. The passion of the Partners I knew was a strong motivator as well.
95% of our Partners actually find us through a Partner referral. Which “passionate” Partners introduced you to SVP?
Norm Francis and Robin Louis.
Well a big thanks to them! You’ve been a Partner for six years now, John. What are you most proud of?
I’d have to say I’m quite proud of the work I’ve done on the Opportunities Committee. It’s afforded me the chance to learn a lot about SVP’s Investee organizations, which are doing so much in the community and are striving to do even more.
Right now I’m actually leading the Discovery Team for a new potential Investee called Blind Beginnings. Their programs aim to help children and youth who are blind and partially sighted to create fulfilling lives. We’re in the early stages of developing a formal business plan to present to the Opportunities Committee. I would love some assistance with this project!
You’ve actually stayed involved with some of our Graduate Investees, is that correct?
Yes, that’s right. After working as lead partner with Power To Be I joined their Board of Directors and have served on it for three years now. Their Power To Play event is coming up in September—it would be great to see some SVP Partners come out.
What inspires you to keep giving?
The passion and commitment of the leaders of our Investees.
What are 3 things we wouldn’t know about you?
- I’m currently the Chair of the Green Cities Foundation, established by the horticulture industry to connect people and plants for a better environment.
- I played football at the University of Manitoba and was invited to a Winnipeg Blue Bomber rookie tryout camp!
- Next year, Sally and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.
