Meet Dempsey Watson, SVP Vancouver’s Manager of Operations.
Although he deplores the spotlight, we want to shine a little light on the man we depend on developing our internal systems and efficiencies, tech fixes, numbers alignment, and – obviously – the latest fashion trends.
When you were a child, what did you dream of being when you grew up?
I wanted to be a great number of different things growing up! But you could say chef – I was often banging around in the kitchen before turned into the amateur cook I am today.
What inspires you to make a difference in the world?
The activists in my life inspire me to make a difference! Seeing systemic change-makers at work in my community is a constant reminder of the work that needs to be done (but also a reminder that the work is possible). It’s part of why my work at SVP is so fulfilling – witnessing our Partners’ and Investees’ commitment to positive social change.
What is one thing nobody would EVER guess about you?
I’m certified to use a chainsaw and to ride an ATV. People don’t think I’m the kind of person that would own a high-visibility vest, but they’re wrong.
What book are you reading right now?
Right now I’m reading Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari, which is about the history and impact of drug criminalization.
Tell us 2 truths and 1 lie.
- I’m a black belt in judo
- I’ve eaten fugu – the deadly Japanese pufferfish – and survived (The fillets were still moving when we cooked them at the table)
- Before working for various non-profits, I was a fashion buyer (There’s a reason I dress so ridiculously all the time)
“I’m a black belt in judo.” I’m actually only an orange belt!
