When Anne Tower met Bob Armstrong at an SVP Strategic Planning Essentials workshop in October 0f 2018, the Adoptive Families Association of BC was at a turning point. For over 40 years, the AFABC had been helping children and youth reach their full potential by promoting adoption and supporting adoptive families at every stage of the adoption journey. But the world of adoption had changed dramatically in recent years. The AFABC’s Board and Anne—the Association’s new Executive Director—were seeking to conduct a strategic refresh in response to the changing landscape.
The timing of the SVP strategy session, led by Bob Armstong, seemed serendipitous, and Anne attended in hopes of gleaning some useful information. Serendipity, however, proved to be far more generous. After the workshop, Anne was so impressed by Bob’s presentation that she recruited him to be AFABC’s Strategic Planning Facilitator, and his skilled facilitation of the AFABC’s strategic planning process over the summer of 2019 was instrumental in pulling together the best thinking from across the organization.
“We are so grateful to Bob and to SVP! I have been involved in many a strategic planning process over a 20-year non-profit career, and Bob is one the best I’ve ever worked with,” says Anne.
Adds Board Member Merel Veldhuis, “With deft skill, Bob helped board members, staff, and managers figure out our new focused direction. We’ve been planning for some significant changes and Bob was very instrumental in helping us have those discussions in a productive and effective manner.”
Now an alumni SVP Investee, the AFABC is looking forward to launching a bold new plan in 2020, and continuing to work towards its vision of a family for every child.
