3 things you didn’t know about Tom Porteous

Posted by SVP Vancouver

Meet SVP Partner and board treasurer, Tom Porteous (full bio). Tom and his wife Jodie have been a part of SVP for 14 years and are big believers in giving back to the community. Tom leads the BPS Wealth Management Group at CIBC Wood Gundy, whose generosity plays out significantly by contributing one third of every single SVP grant to Investees (read more about this). BPS supports children and youth through the CIBC Wood Gundy Caring For Kids Fund, and each year raises most of their charitable funds through the annual Boston Pizza Foundation golf tournament (coming soon!). SVP is honoured to be one of three charitable beneficiaries at this very successful, well-attended event.

One of the benefits of being a part of SVP Vancouver is being surrounded by similar-minded people who care about children and youth at risk, and are motivated to make a difference in their lives. “I enjoy learning more about my fellow SVP Partners,” says Tom, “where they grew up, about their families, how they think critically and analyze, what makes them successful, and how that allows them to make the people and places around them a better place.”

3 things you didn’t know about me…

  1. Jodie and I both played soccer and fastball at National level with Jodie playing for Canada in both sports. I was asked to wrestle and play soccer up at SFU, but upon finding out the wrestling team trained at 6:00 in the morning, I opted only to play soccer. Afternoon soccer training times are much more palatable!
  1. We have hosted multiple billets all season from the WHL Vancouver Giants Hockey Team for the past four years. Most recently, two of our billets got drafted by NHL teams: Ty Ronning was drafted last year by the New York Rangers, and Jakob Stukel was drafted by our own Vancouver Canucks.
  1. I’m a person of strong personal faith. I attend a bible study on Monday afternoons with other businessmen. I’m not a big fan of rules, regulations and religious doctrine, but feel strongly about putting others first, patience (which is always a challenge for me), kindness, and love.
