Sole Food transforms vacant urban land into street farms that grow artisan quality fruits and vegetables, available at farmer’s markets, local restaurants and retail outlets.
Sole Food’s mission is to empower individuals with limited resources by providing jobs, agricultural training and inclusion in a supportive community of farmers and food lovers.
Working under the guidance of farmer/author Michael Ableman, Sole Food operates a network of farms throughout the city that are providing meaningful employment to 25 individuals who are dealing with drug addiction and mental illness.
In partnership with Vancity, SVP Vancouver has provided a grant to assist Sole Food in developing its sales and marketing capability. $35,000 will be directed to the build of a permanent farm stand and $17,000 will be provided in the Spring 2014 to hire a farm stand manager for the season.
SVP Grant Commitment: $52,000 over two years (2013 – 2014)
This grant represents the close of SVP’s Social Enterprise Fund which donated over $868,000 to 14 social enterprises over the past 7 years.
