The mission of the Learning Disabilities Society (formally Learning Disabilities Association of Vancouver) is to empower every child and youth in Greater Vancouver with a learning disability to achieve life-long success and happiness. Learning Disabilities Society’s (LDS) specialized interventionists provide research-based individualized instruction and professional support to children and youth at risk who struggle in school. Their programs teach children how to leverage their strengths in order to overcome their learning challenges and become independent in the school system. LDS maintains affordable rates and access to bursaries and scholarships for children and youth in need. Over 60% of LDS students receive financial support.
Why their work matters
There are more than 18,000 children and youth in British Columbia living with a diagnosed learning disability. Almost half of those children and youth live below the poverty line, with little to no support in the public-school system. Without intervention, children and youth with learning disabilities become increasingly vulnerable, leading to dramatically increased levels of high school drop-outs, criminal activity, and suicide.
SVP will work with LDS to support building capacity in the areas of fund development, marketing and communications, strategic planning, and financial management.
