From Ciara’s Heart: 2-Gen Updates, Increased Grant Making, and More!

Posted by tucson

Dear SVP Partners,

Wherever this email finds you, I hope that you are enjoying the summer. Here in Tucson we are experiencing a rainy July. This monsoon season brings back fond memories of walking to the Rillito with my grandfather after a big rain, making bets along the way about how high the water would be flowing.

As we wrap up our fiscal year and plan for a big year ahead, I find myself thinking about the many updates I want to share with all of you. Staff, partners and our board of directors have been hard at work bringing our vision to create real, sustainable, and measurable community change through a 2Gen approach into reality, secure resources to fuel our growth, and ensure that our partners can connect their passion with purpose.

2Gen moves from Idea to Action

When we committed to 2Gen, our first step was to focus our community investments on nonprofits who have or are moving towards a 2Gen approach. Based on a community needs assessment we prioritized those initial 2Gen investments on Early Childhood Education and Postsecondary & Employment Pathways and welcomed Interfaith Community Services, JobPath and Make Way for Books into our network. With three enthusiastic nonprofits and investments to strengthen and scale their organizations in place, it was time to move forward and build the collaborative model. I am excited to announce that in the past few months the collaborative portion of our 2Gen approach has moved from idea to action.

Some of the key milestones we have accomplished are:

  • Brought our 3 Nonprofit Partners together to launch the 2Gen Collaboration
  • Established monthly Nonprofit CEO strategy meetings
  • Completed an assessment and prioritized three key areas: Referral Systems, Data Tracking and Social Capital Programming
  • Developed a one-year work plan and timeline
  • Established working groups focused on the three key areas and secured Partner Leads
  • Increased our grant making with the introduction of 2Gen Accelerator Grants focused on building the infrastructure to support the 2Gen Collaboration

If this piques your interest and you would like to know more, I invite you to read the First Year 2Gen Collaboration Strategy here.

Making bigger investments in our VISION

Our 2Gen vision is a big one. It requires us to expand our resources. Since 2019 we have been steadily growing and diversifying our revenue to support our increased work. With solid financials in place, and a commitment to real community change the SVP board of directors just approved the FY 22 budget.

Some budget highlights include:

  • As a part of our ongoing growth strategy and commitment to funding community impact, we have budgeted $920,000 in expenses including all aspects of our capacity building work, 2Gen and Fast Pitch.
  • More than 85% of our annual budget is allocated towards program expenses.
  • We are increasing our grant making to $320,000 with $170,000 allocated towards 2Gen and $150,000 to Fast Pitch
  • We continue to diversify our revenue streams including grants, partner investments and corporate sponsors. Partners remain our #1 revenue stream – we could not do this without you!

I am excited to share that we are currently at $505,000 raised of our $600,000 Hillman Challenge Grant goal, with a hope to raise the remaining $95,000 by the end of September. Thank you to all of our Partners who stepped up and gave in support of this challenge grant. If you are interested in supporting our work to move children and families from poverty to opportunity using a 2Gen approach, make your investment here.

More opportunities for Partners

With our work expanding, there are even more opportunities for you to get involved. Our recent Engage Newsletter shared our needs for Fast Pitch Mentors, Selection Committee, and for SVP Coaches. In spring 2022, we will hold our Community Investment Process and select our next Nonprofit Partner(s), followed by Assessment Process, and the formation of Advisory Teams. All of these processes are Partner Powered, and are opportunities for you to get directly involved.

We heard that you have been wanting to connect and have a robust calendar of social and educational events including a Facilitation Community of Practice, a summer social graciously hosted by Fleming & Curti, an Equity Chat, and a series of casual happy hours in September and October hosted by members of our board. Whether you are a new Partner looking to meet some of your fellow SVP members or a long timer looking to reconnect, we hope to see you at an upcoming event.

Time to Connect

During this time of growth and change, I welcome the opportunity to connect with you – our Partners who make this all possible. On August 11th and 13th I am hosting Coffee and Connect events. These casual get-togethers are an opportunity for you to hear more about where SVP is headed and share your questions, comments and ideas. I hope to see you there.

Your partner in community,

Ciara

P.S. In addition to the exciting changes happening at SVP, big things have been happening in the Garcia household. Ariana got married and Aubrey graduated from ASU!
