Katja Shaye joined SVP in 2008 and has served as Lead Partner for SVP investee Team Read since 2013. She sees literacy and English language proficiency as keys to closing opportunity gaps for kids from low-income and refugee families.
Ever since Katja taught English at a refugee camp in Thailand in the 90s, she has been committed to supporting refugee resettlement in the US. She is currently teaching employment orientation to refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq, Burma and the Ukraine (among others) at Jewish Family Service in Kent.
Katja has a background in print and TV journalism and has taught both Swedish and English language learners. She is a graduate of Carleton College and the University of Washington, where she received her MA in Scandinavian Languages and Literature. She and her husband, Kollin Min, live near Green Lake with their two sons.

Team Read's website was old. Really old. "Before giving people our web address, I used to tell them please, don’t judge the quality of our programs by the quality of our website," explains Executive Director, Maureen Massey. What was a solid site in 2008, now looked woefully outdated and it was getting in the way of Team Read’s fundraising and growth.
