With the first hint of Fall in the air, on September 18th SVP’s Fast Pitch Quarterfinals took place on the UW Campus at Paccar Hall–which made for an ideal venue. Paccar Hall is quite literally the picture of Innovation, Sustainability, and Community as the first of two new state-of-the-art buildings and home to the UW Foster School of Business.
With gratitude for the very environment that the Quarterfinals event occurred in here are some memorable quotes from a variety of our Quarterfinalists who advance on to the Semifinals:
Growing up, Stacy Smedley of SEEDclassroom loved playing outside in natural surroundings. At age 8 when she saw her natural playground destroyed after the land was sold for development, she remembers telling her mother, “One day I will create buildings that don’t destroy nature.”
Returning for a second year, co-founder Tauschia Copeland from Wonder Treats (making healthy, happy dog treats from fruits and veggies) made this striking comment, “We want to put unsustainable business out of business.”
Bob Redmond, of Spirit of the Bee, shared that one in three bites of food is due to bees “being” in existence (or not.) Creating more acres of pollinator habitats is critical. He asked the audience, “Can we pollinate the crops we have?”
Presenting for the Post-Prison Education Program, Megan Hammond accentuated the problem they aim to solve with the reality that “every other person who walks out of prison will go right back.”
Angela Metcalf of The Crib and Beyond Day Care Center passionately stated that, “The inability to accept a paid position because you need daycare should be unheard of. The best antidote to poverty is a paycheck.”
And, on a final note: Kudos to all our Quarterfinalists who presented for clearly the Video Pitch Clinics and Coaching (given to date) did what they were intended to do. So many strong presentations; so many stand-out statements. We’ll see you all at the Final Showdown on October 28th at McCaw Hall.
