2021 WA Legislative Priorities

Stay tuned for updates from SVP Seattle Investees with information on their priorities and bills in the legislature and calls to action that you can take to support these priorities.

Week of March 1st: Legislative Update

The HEAL Act passed out of the Senate Chamber tonight by a vote of 28-21!

This is a significant milestone, achieved by collective work. To date, Front and Centered have organized its community to send over 3300 emails to the Senate body. And that number just includes the messages they were able to track.

Front and Centered have taken one critical step towards enshrining this notion into state law, that access to a clean, healthy, and safe environment is a civil right. They will  follow up in the next few days with the next steps as SB 5141 is taken up in the House.

Week of February 22nd: Legislative Update

HB1099 – First of all, moments ago HB 1099, our bill with Rep Duerr to add climate change planning to the GMA, was passed out of the Appropriations Committee. THIS IS HUGE! Thank you all so much for the enormous role you have played in making this possible. We still have a ways to go, but this is a step in the right direction. I wish we could all get together to celebrate, but for now, pat yourself on the back and celebrate this win.

SB 5042 – We’re in week 7 of the legislative session and we’re calling on everyone to engage on SB 5042 – Futurewise’s GMA vesting bill. Our senators need to hear from constituents about why it’s critical that the Senate pass SB 5042 this week.

SB 5042 closes a critical “vesting” loophole in the GMA that allows counties to illegally expand their Urban Growth Areas. These illegal UGA expansions gobble up local farmland and wildlife for suburban sprawl and present a fiscal liability for local governments if they are found to be out of compliance with the GMA.

We first introduced this bill in 2008 – we can’t wait any longer to see it passed.

Thank you to all of you that have already helped to engage your members and supporters in advocating for this bill. If you haven’t yet, below are a few easy actions you can take to support this effort:

  1. Email your members: Here is the action alert to share with your members. Feel free to use this template email!
  2.  Post to your social media!: Click here for template posts and graphics.

We would also love as many of our partners as possible to email Democratic Senators on behalf of your organizations to urge them to vote #YESonSB5042:

In other news: HB 1220In addition to SB 5042 and HB1099, we’re still moving forward on HB 1220, our housing update to the GMA. HB 1220 passed out of the House Appropriations Committee last Thursday – wahoo! We’re so grateful for the hundreds of supporters and partners who tuned in over the last few weeks to sign in Pro, provide spoken or written testimony, or email their representatives asking for a yes vote. HB 1220 is a critical, must-pass bill in the 2021 session and it has momentum thanks to you all!

Week of February 8th: Legislative Update

The Fair Start for Kids Act (HB 1213 / SB 5237) has cleared the first hurdle and advanced to fiscal committees. Will you help it take the next step and sign in PRO on the House and Senate bills before 12:30pm on February 16?

Click the links above to go to the bill page on the legislative website. Select “Pro” as your position from the drop-down menu, enter your personal information, and click the Submit Registration button to be counted by our lawmakers as a supporter of kids.

Along with their work on the HEAL Act, Front and Centered and Puget Sound Sage have put forward the Energy For All law (House Bill 1490), under the sponsorship of Representative Kirsten Harris-Talley. The measure would make it easier for low-income people and persons with disabilities to power their homes. (Learn More)

Puget Sound Sage is also working to oppose all forms of cap-and-trade policy, specifically SB 5126. Puget Sound Sage demands just climate policies to focus on revenue generation to build climate-resilient and fossil-fuel-free infrastructure. (Learn More)

Children’s Alliance is urging lawmakers to vote YES on Senate Bill 5096, to raise revenue and build a state budget that works for kids. Additionally, Children’s Alliance participated in a week of action calling for progressive revenue with the Balance Our Tax Code Coalition. (Learn More)
