Camie Goldhammer, Daybreak Star Doulas’ program manager, and her team of doulas provide full-spectrum pregnancy services critical to the indigenous people living in King County.
The Daybreak Star Doulas program is the first of its kind in the nation in the support it provides to the urban native community. Primarily funded by Best Start for Kids (BSK), Camie worked closely with a cultural advisory board to design a program that is “completely Native in every way” with an all-Native staff delivering services embedded in indigenous practices and culture. The freedom in funding by BSK allowed Daybreak Star Doulas to incorporate traditional medicine and indigenous practices into how they support women through pregnancy, birth and postpartum care, no matter the outcome of the pregnancy.
