National back to Local

Posted by

national-back-to-local.jpgAs supporters of early learning, SVP knows the importance of high quality early learning programs, especially for children most at risk. On Saturday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, a bill that slashes funding for Head Start, one of our nation’s largest commitment to early learning. This budget would cut more than 218,000 children enrolled in Head Start/Early Head Start nationwide

One of our SVP Investees, Denise Louie Education Center, estimates that they would have to cut 1/3 of their budget resulting in at least 100 at-risk children locally and families going unserved or being terminated from the program.

For four decades, Head Start has enjoyed bipartisan support.

Research shows that investing $1 in high quality early learning programs like Head Start returns $7 in increased earnings and taxes paid by parents and children, reduced incarceration rates, higher graduation rates and reduced special education costs.

Although these cuts have already passed the House, the battle for funding is just beginning. The US Senate will be the next to act on the House’s proposal. The deadline for Congress and the President to pass a budget is March 18th.
