Adelante Mujeres: Growth Through Partnership

Posted by Social Venture Partners Portland

In 2012, Adelante Mujeres won the award for “Organization That Does the Most with the Least” from Portland Magazine. However, the organization didn’t want to win that award again–it wanted to grow and expand its infrastructure in response to increasing community needs. SVP Portland began our partnership with Adelante Mujeres that same year to help them realize their goals, including strategic planning, which ultimately led to the desired organizational growth.

Adelante Mujeres served nearly 3,000 people and had eight programs in 2012. Today they serve more than 10,000 people and have ten thriving programs, including an Early Childhood Education Program. Adelante’s preschool is a bilingual program that teaches early literacy skills and builds kindergarten readiness among Latino immigrant children of women participating in their Adult Education program.

In a recent 20th anniversary event celebrating our partnership with Adelante Mujeres, LeRoy Feigelson, a member of the Adelante Mujeres Board, reflected on his engagement as SVP Lead Partner: “The thing near and dear to my heart is the growth from 15 or so preschool kids up to over 100–that was something I really wanted to be engaged in.” The SVP partnership with Adelante Mujeres also laid the groundwork for their new facility in Forest Grove. Adelante Mujeres co-founder and Executive Director Bridget Cooke said, “when we learned about SVP’s focus on early childhood education, we knew that the resources and brainpower that SVP provided would be central to us being able to have a capital campaign. Now we have five early-childhood classrooms inside our 17,000 square foot building.” The culmination of our three-year investment was a five-year strategic plan, which set the stage for Adelante’s capital campaign and facility expansion.

Adelante Mujeres is the only social change organization in Oregon focused on empowering Latina women. Cooke is proud of the “innovative, engaging programming that is really listening deeply to the community and responding to their community’s aspirations as well as challenges and needs.” For Feigelson, his SVP engagement was “a really meaningful engagement for me that really enriched my life–and it’s just really great to see the growth and the impact that they’re having now.” 2022 will mark the 20-year anniversary for Adelante Mujeres, and we look forward to helping them celebrate as they continue to provide holistic education and empowerment opportunities to low-income Latina women and their families to ensure full participation and active leadership in the community.
