Tell us about yourselves.
Mary and Jim live in Minnetonka and have adult twins: Jack and Emily. Jim worked in the software industry which required significant travel and commitment to his career. Mary worked as a CPA until the twins were born and then became a full-time stay-at-home mom, volunteer and caretaker.
What attracted you to SVP and inspired you to be an engaged philanthropist?
Mary and Jim each had active lives with various organizations, but saw SVP as an opportunity to volunteer together. They saw that SVP’s unique mission of engaged philanthropy would allow them to bring their business skills to helping Investees scale their impact in the community, and to get involved beyond writing a check.
What has been your most fulfilling SVP activity (so far!)?
Both Mary and Jim enjoy going to SVP meetings together and educating themselves on the community needs addressed by our investees. Jim has been involved with many aspects of SVP – from serving on SVP’s Board of Directors, leading workshops, and supporting organizational growth – but most enjoyed his time as a Lead Partner with Breakthrough Twin Cities. The Lead Partner role allowed Jim to build a strategic relationship with Breakthrough to better understand their mission, challenges and people involved in the organization. He found it rewarding to bring other SVP Partners into the consulting engagement and see Breakthrough grow their impact.
What do you do in your leisure time? Any unique tidbits you’d like to share?
Jim now works part-time as a management consultant. He and Mary enjoy the outdoors, spending time at their cabin in northern Minnesota and being with family.
