Kathy Buck


Kathy retired from a 21-year career as an investment professional and portfolio manager in March 2018. Her experience has spanned all aspects of the investment practice – from developing the strategy, business plan, and legal documents; to marketing, portfolio management, and risk management. She worked for Fidelity Management & Research (FMR Co) from 1996-2006, and again from 2010-2018. Most recently, Kathy was a portfolio manager with FMR Co, managing over $3 billion of assets in the consumer sector as part of their value-oriented investment team. She has also held leadership positions at Wintrust Capital Management, where she led the creation and launch of their Small Cap strategy; and Magnetar Capital, where she led the start-up of an asset management group, managing capital raising, developing investment process and procedures, and constructing the portfolio.

From January – April 2018, Kathy served as interim chief operating officer at The People’s Music School, a nonprofit tuition-free music school serving 700 children in Chicago. In this role, she provided leadership in the areas of strategy, finance, operations and human resources.

Kathy currently serves on the board, investment committee, and executive committee of the Chairmen’s Advisory Council of the Big Shoulders Fund, the finance committee of Chicago Jesuit Academy, as a board member of St. Genevieve Catholic School, and as a member of UChicago Comer Children’s Hospital’s development board. Professionally, she is a member of Chicago Finance Exchange, and is a former board member for the CFA Society of Chicago. Finally, she volunteers as a division commissioner and assistant coach at Oz Park Baseball Association, and as a coach for Northside Basketball League.

Kathy graduated from Georgetown University with a BSBA in finance. She is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. She and her husband Kevin Preloger have two children and live in the Hyde Park / Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago.
