SVP Chicago is pleased to announce that Breakthrough has been selected as its newest investee. The investment committee was intrigued by Breakthrough’s place-based model and opportunities for SVP capacity-building support.
Founded in 1992, Breakthrough began as an emergency shelter for adults experiencing homelessness. In 2000, Breakthrough moved to East Garfield Park and began to focus on a 40-block target zone in the community, expanding services to serve youth and their families. Breakthrough’s FamilyPlex, a community center, opened in 2015.
Breakthrough’s vision is to see a safe, stable and engaged East Garfield Park. This vision was developed alongside the community. Breakthrough has big goals to increase programs and services to the community, including scaling youth a family programs, creating a new financial opportunity center and growing violence prevention initiatives.
