Our Mission: Unloop enables people who have been in prison to succeed in careers in tech.
What inspires you most about the work you do? Our students. In our students’ experiences, we have seen the trauma that incarceration can inflict, and how a criminal record can deprive a person of the basic building blocks of a stable life. We’re driven by a deep sense of injustice in seeing our students held back from their full potential by a dehumanizing system, as well as a desire to see them flourish. It is our goal for Unloop to help people marginalized by a conviction to make enough money to be in control of the trajectory of their lives. We want to see mass incarceration end, and building a program that supports individuals in their journey to break from involvement in the criminal justice system is a privilege and joy.
What’s next for your organization? We’re currently raising 12 months financing, about $100K, to allow us to staff up and drive initiatives that expand the number of employers we work with to offer jobs and internships. Expanding our employment programs will help us build the Unloop program into a sustainable pathway for the ambitious and talented men and women that we serve, and reach financial sustainability by the end of 2018.
What have you learned from the SVP Fast Pitch process so far? Audiences are diverse, structure the pitch for maximum impact. Ask for what your organization actually needs.
What are you most excited about on October 24th? The opportunity to share out about our motivated students and mission, to a large, powerful and invested audience.
