Goodbye Overhead Myth, Hello Capacity Building

Posted by Willow Russell

Unrestricted funding and strengthening nonprofits is part of the SVP DNA.  We do our best to walk the talk, but it’s also important to talk the talk – sparking conversations in the social sector.

In the recent issue of the Nonprofit Quarterly SVP staff members, Lynn Coriano and Sally Gillis were interviewed for piece entitled Supporting Nonprofit Capacity: Three Principles for Grantmakers.   The article outlined the three Cs for providing capacity building support:

  • Make it Contextual
  • Make It Multi-Year and Continuous
  • Make it Collective

Hand in hand with capacity building support, SVP also practices unrestricted grantmaking – believing that the nonprofits we support are closest to the work and therefore best positioned to decide where to spend their grant dollars.

This practice is gaining traction in some philanthropic circles, and was further justified when three leading sources of information about nonprofits – GuideStarCharity Navigator, and BBB Wise Giving Alliance – released a letter debunking The Overhead Myth.

In an interview with Grantmakers for Effective Organizations, Paul Shoemaker shared the importance of unrestricted funding and how funders can begin to make the shift.

Thank you for taking this novel approach! Restricted funds create a hierarchy with grant makers dictating to non-profits about the right and wrong way to work. SVP’s approach creates a much more equal and collaborative playing field. I haven’t worked for a non-profit funded by SVP, but I hope to one day!
