Melinda joined the SVP team in August 2017 to coordinate and plan learning opportunities, as well as grow SVP’s commitment to advance racial equity. She was drawn to SVP because she started out her career working with underserved kids and youth, and has experienced how the lack of understanding and opportunities can diminish future success. In addition, as a biracial Korean American who grew up in both international and homogenous communities, she is personally invested in the commitment to equity. She has experienced firsthand how her identity has been “defined” by hurtful stereotypes and interactions, and how these interactions put up invisible barriers to getting ahead. As a result, her professional career has centered around advancing social justice and equity.
Melinda brings with her over a decade of experience in the nonprofit field, including two start-up nonprofits. Her work always revolves around social justice issues, such as poverty, community development, homelessness and housing, criminal justice, foster care, physical and mental health, and poverty. Her work history ranges from direct service, like case management, to policy and nonprofit leadership (former Executive Director). The common thread with all of her work history is the commitment to learning and equity. Nearly all of her work experience involves education, training facilitation, and learning, ranging from teaching an after-school program at a Title I elementary school, to creating and facilitating curricula to educate Oregonians about the impacts of poverty.
When Melinda is not at work, she is often exploring and learning something new (surprise!). For instance, she is learning how to stand-up paddle board, and is signing up for some ukelele lessons. You can also find her doing something outdoors, like hiking or getting her hands dirty in the garden, and cuddling with her fur kid, Huey.
