Kate Kilberg

As an attorney with fifteen years’ experience, Kate’s practice focuses on non-profit and tax-exempt organizations, social enterprise, philanthropy, and complex estate planning and administration.

What is your profession? How do you spend your days?

I am a practicing lawyer, so I spend much of my time serving my law clients. I also spend a good deal of time with my two sons, who are into Legos, books, tae kwon do, swimming, biking, and just about anything outdoors.

If you could have lunch with one person living or dead, who would it be and why?

I would like to have lunch with Viktor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, as well as a Holocaust survivor. In Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl describes his experiences in Nazi concentration camps, which led him to discover the importance of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most brutal ones, and thus, a reason to continue living. One of my favorite quotes from the book is, “Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather he must recognize that it is he who is asked.”

What do you value about Social Venture Partners?

I am impressed by SVP’s ability to deeply engage its partners. In addition, the leadership team is top-notch, which I believe is crucial for the effective functioning of any organization.

What do you want to accomplish in your next decade?

I would like to continue to build and grow Catalyst Law. Founding Catalyst Law with my partners has been one of the most rewarding accomplishments of my life. I am excited about the work we do, and the possibilities for making a meaningful contribution to our clients, to the legal and social enterprise professions, as well as to the community as a whole.

What criteria do you use in deciding where to focus your philanthropy?

In recent years, the causes I have been most drawn to are health and environment related, as well as social and economic justice. Within those broad subject areas, I most enjoy working with organizations that have effective leadership and a demonstrated capacity to accomplish impact.
