2016 Leadership Retreat
April 25, 2016 @ 8:30 am - April 26, 2016 @ 12:30 pm
All of the issues that SVPs address in their communities are underpinned in part by persistent, systemic inequities. More and more, we’re coming to realize that in order to tackle education, youth development or environmental challenges, we must be better equipped to address systemic and structural disparities in privilege, power and access to resources. As strategic philanthropists, we have an important role to play in addressing systemic biases, and the SVP Leadership Retreat will equip you to get started.
The retreat will approach the topic from a place of curiosity, hope and enthusiasm, balancing the complexity of equity issues with ease of application. While the session focuses honestly on issues of power, privilege and access to resources, it is not a place of blame, shame or guilt, rather an opportunity to promote growth and progress. Through stories and personal examples, the facilitator approaches the topic of equity and social justice in a diagnostic way, rather than assigning blame.
Following the retreat, you will have a base framework and series of questions to allow you to:
- Start a critical conversation about equity and social justice within your SVP’s work. How is SVP benefiting from structural inequities? Are there ways SVP is unwittingly denying access to privilege, power and resources? How do we ensure that our practices, policies and procedures don’t further the structural inequities in our communities?
- Conduct an equity and social justice assessment of your SVP’s work;
- Help your SVP create an equity and social justice commitment to your community; and
- Set an equity and social justice goal for your SVP’s work.
All staff, board members, lead partners, committee chairs, founders and emerging leaders are encouraged to attend, and hone your skills with your colleagues from across the network.
The retreat also includes a welcome reception for all participants. Additionally, the staff forums and chairs’ forums will take place, along with SVP Arizona’s Spring Social at Museum of the West.
We hope you will join us in sunny Scottsdale!
