15th-AnniversaryMost anniversaries are occasions to take stock, to reminisce, and above all to celebrate. Social Venture Partners Cleveland spent 2016 doing just that – musing, remembering, and celebrating our 15 years of engaged philanthropy and community impact. By the end of 2016, we had amassed $3.2 million in outright grants, other donations, and pro bono consulting by our Partners since our inception in 2001. We also orchestrated an exciting video which captures the stories of scores of SVP Partners and four of our past Investees – EDWINS Leadership & Restaurant Institute, Near West Theatre, Open Doors Academy, and Youth Opportunities Unlimited. And we celebrated all year long in other ways, too.

We offered an education event on Workforce Development at which we highlighted a panel of former Investees – EDWINS, Famicos Foundation, Seeds of Literacy, and Youth Opportunities Unlimited – all of whom had their own take on this critical issue. We also invited a handful of local thought leaders from The Cleveland Foundation, Cuyahoga County, the Federal Reserve, and Greater Cleveland Partnership to add their insights and reflections to the mix.

We also held intimate Partner Dinners all year long so that Partners could get to know each other even better and use this familiarity as a springboard for the collaborative consulting they do with our nonprofit Investees. Having grown recently from about 50 individual Partners to about 80, these dinners offered a chance to bond and to discover more about fellow Partners’ idiosyncratic lives. For example, over the course of the year, we learned about Partners who:

• helped Roald Dahl with the title of his book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
• sang in a rock band at the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame
• eloped and got married in City Hall in Hong Kong
• had been a mime and professional actress
• had a father who was knighted
• won the National Doubles Tennis Championship in their mid-40s
• summited Mount Rainier

And this just scratches the surface.

All in all, it was a thrilling year during which we rededicated ourselves to the capacity-building work we do every day with our nonprofit Investees and one another.

We look forward to another 15 years of passion and purpose, impact and inclusion, and appreciation and affection for one another and our community!
