CALLING NONPROFIT BOARD MEMBERS

Are you new to a nonprofit board? Have you been on a board for years but still aren’t sure exactly what you’re supposed to be doing? Do you know that a good board makes an organization better, but don’t know exactly how that happens?

Are you an Executive Director or CEO who doesn’t have the capacity to do education and development for your board?

SVP’s Boards with Brains series is for you!

In our second session Walt Pounds will cover fundamentals of FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT.

Every member of a nonprofit board has a fiduciary responsibility to that organization – this session will prepare board members to have an adequate understanding of financial statements, how to ask the right questions, identify possible problems and perform good oversight.

We’ll discuss real-world situations that put organizations in serious trouble and how a deeper look can help avoid problems. In small groups, we’ll use business cases to bring financial reporting and planning issues into practical perspective.

About this Session:

Attendees of this session can expect to:

  • Understand financial statements
  • Learn how to ask the right questions and identify potential problems
  • Learn how to perform good oversight
  • Understand linkage of historic info to the budget and best budgeting practices

About our Presenter:

Walt Pounds advises both non-profit and for-profit organizations regarding strategy, financial management, operations and organizational development. A critical thinker, leveraging over 30 years in the information technology industry to help clients meet business objectives, Walt enjoyed a successful career in Fortune 500 and venture-capital backed companies. As Founder/CEO of an information technology company, he was responsible for financial system implementations across a broad range of national public sector and commercial clients. After negotiating the sale of the company his focus is now on helping social enterprise companies achieve success.

Walt participates with Social Venture Partners, Investor Circle, Slow Money, Impact HUB and Unreasonable Institute. Aside from business consulting, Walt enjoys the open road on a motorcycle and working in the fields of his latest business venture – an organic egg farm in Boulder County.

About SVP’s Boards with Brains series:

SVP Boulder County believes strong nonprofits deliver better results. For our nonprofits to be wildly successful, we believe strong leaders – both staff and board – help create adept organizations. Our Boards with Brains professional development series was designed with that in mind. We’ve got a variety of nonprofit leadership topics, as well as ‘tracks’ and levels to help attendees identify which sessions suit them best.

Our per-session fee is a below-market $40. Individuals or organizations can purchase a transferable, 8-punch pass (giving you a $10 discount on each ticket), and, each session also includes a limited number of scholarship slots (just ask).

Please note, SVP closes registration two days prior to each session and all attendees are asked to register in advance. Day-of drop in participants should understand there may not be space to accommodate them, or sufficient quantities of session materials available. They will be expected to pay on site with a credit card (please note, scholarship and 8-pack pricing is not valid for drop-in attendees).
